A Peace Divided Peacekeeper Tanya Huff Books

In this episode Warden Torin Kerr and her team have to rescue a bunch of scientists exploring a planet which might have evidence about the plastics that manipulated both the Confederation and the Primacy into an intergalactic war. Rumor has it, a weapon against the plastic has been found.

The scientists have been captured by mercenaries who want the weapon. They are two factions. The first is a war veteran broken by the war who will do anything to keep his ship flying and his people safe. The second faction has been hired by the mastermind to find the weapon. This faction is very willing to use violence and intimidation to force the scientists to find a weapon that may not even exist.

The Wardens aren't going on the rescue alone. They have been given "help" from the Primacy. The war is over but the two sides are just learning how to work together and neither side trusts the other. Luckily, a number of the being on the Primacy team are known to Torin because they all escaped from a prison together.

The viewpoint shifts from that of one of the scientists to Torin and her team so that we can see events from both sides. I liked that the scientist who is a Niln is trying to understand the invaders who are from the Younger Races. I liked her relationship with one of the young human mercenaries.

This was an exciting space opera. Torin and her newly integrated team need to rescue the hostages but keep getting sidetracked by the potential presence of the plastic. Torin would very much like revenge for all the millions of life the war caused. She is still haunted by her many dead.

A Peace Divided Peacekeeper Tanya Huff Books Reviews

Unlike many of Tanya Huff's books, "A Peace Divided" had a slow beginning. I think it was because Gunny Kerr's team was mostly not on mission at the beginning. And I think because Huff got a little heavy-handed in her political rhetoric. The bad guy POV sections were just painful to read both because of the current political climate and just how over the top he was.

Once the team had a mission, things picked up quickly and we got back to the usual quality of the rest of the series. All the usual characters were wonderful and we got to see some characters from the past that provided wonderful counterpoints to the team.

The epilogue did get pretty dark for me, but it was only a couple pages, so it wasn't enough to sour the ending.

Overall, slow beginning, but stick with it until the team gets on the move and things get much better.
I have given all 6 of the books that came before this one 4-5 stars but this one turned me off almost immediately when it started in on gun control, in a book on space marines! On page 12, they discover a pistol, a weapon that has been outlawed for centuries. Only the military should have weapons, now that's a scary thought. On page 33 it is described "It's not a soldier's weapon. It wasn't a weapon for war, or at least not the kind of war both sides knew they were fighting. The implications were as ugly as the small gun ." I honestly don't know if I am going to finish this book but I know I won't recommend it.
After an initial wonderful battle with gun-runners, things get a little slow as we follow the archaeologists and their captors. This made it a little harder for me to get into the story at first, but it pays off later with character development. There are a lot of characters in here Torin’s strike team, the Primacy members joining her, the mercenaries, and the archaeologists, and it’s hard to keep track of them all. Thankfully Huff is very good at developing strong individualistic characters, so even though I don’t have the best memory I was able to hang on by my fingernails. She succeeds at bringing new alien races to life, something she’d been doing for the Federation races before. I find her complex web of races, characters, and history a delight to read about.

Once Torin and her people get to the planet where the archaeologists are, the action picks up and it sucked me right in. Huff manages detailed strategy and tight fight scenes that capture the imagination. I never get tired of Gunnery Sergeant Torin Kerr. Even after so many books she still has growth as a character–as a former NCO, she’s finding she misses the security of having an officer to keep their eye on the bigger picture for her, and she has to learn to stand on her own in that arena. Don’t worry, though–she’s still a source of much attitude and amusement as well! She manages to be super-confident and skilled without ever coming across as a Mary Sue. She’s a fantastic strong character with good reason to be that way.
Torin Kerr is my absolute most favorite kick-ass heroine. Needless this new installation in Confederation/Peacekeeper series was the most anticipated release of the year; and I was so not disappointed. Quite the opposite – I loved it. As always the book was perfectly action packed and delightfully hilarious. But the most important thing about the series, that behind brilliantly written military sci-fi, well-developed world building and snarky multidimensional characters and never-ending innuendo (which are a bit flat and repeating, are always funny) Huff raises a lot of interesting questions on such human weaknesses as bigotry, xenophobia, prejudice, self-importance and etc. That saying I love that the new series developed intriguing, captivating mystery plot that goes far over the initial “ours-not-to-question-why” military trope.
Tanya Huff has long been in my list of authors whose books I will buy sight unseen. This newest book is every bit as good as her previous ones. I started reading her when I discovered the Wizard of the Grove, and then through the Blood books and the Smoke books. I don't generally enjoy Sci-Fi, but as a writer, Ms. Huff draws you in, and is such a master at world building, it oesn't matter. She could write "The History of Linoleum", and I would pre order it.

In case you haven't read her before, here's a general idea of what to expect- Strong female characters who nonetheless have their flaws, fluid sexuality and genders, fast paced action with bare bones exposition so you will want to read it again... and again.
