The writing is so good that you are right there with these very realistic characters. And because it is so well written, it is a very fast read. I read it in one day and I rarely do that!

Levi delivers such witty dialogue that I laughed out loud dozens and dozens of times and that doesn't happen everyday either.

Lindsey is such a sweet character, you just have to root for her because she is so likeable.

I loved to despise Lindsey's stuffy, rich parents especially her mother. I hated Lindsey's obnoxious disgusting ex-fiancee, Rob although he was written perfectly. And Levi's, nosy and pushy neighbor, Elena who was always popping up.

The relationship that builds between Lindsey and Levi is a tumultuous one and is mostly hindered by Levi's trust issues.

This book does have some sexually explicit content and these characters are full of passion especially, Levi, who is a very hot and desirable character.

It is definitely, the best book, I have read in a long time and since joining Kindle Unlimited, I read several books a week.

In the Cards Jamie Beck 9781477825693 Books Reviews

This was a good book with a love story surprise at the end. Two people so different were drawn together by love and thinking of the other person. It does have a little explicit sex but it is tastefully done. Read it for yourself!
Haven't read one of these for awhile, but I was down in the dumps and wanted something simple & sweet to distract me. This book was just what the doctor ordered! Not too graphic, but enough to get the point, lots and lots of sexual tension, and two likeable characters who needed to change things.

I recommend this book to those looking for a "sweet escape." Storyline and writing are smooth and comfortingly predictable.

Thanks for this, Ms. Beck!!
I seldom give book reviews, even though i know i should. I feel compelled to let everyone know how much i enjoyed this book. The story is great and i enjoyed the characters so much. I am far from a prude, but the limited amount of swear words was nice. The author knew just when and how to use them. You get to know the characters from beginning to end and the development of the characters was spot on. You really come to know them and understand why each is the way they are. I loved the romance of the book. so smooth and alluring. It has been a long time since i have read a romance such as this. The sex pages were later in the book, right where you would expect the characters to come together. The scenes are well written, nothing raunchy or kinky. Two people who come together in love. I noticed the author has written several "serial books" but i truly love this stand alone. I hope she writes more stand along books, she certainly has a gift for it. Trust me, you will not be disappointed if you purchase this book.
In the Cards is a GREAT book from the first page to the last. Levi and Lindsey are interesting, likeable opposites and broken in numerous ways. The nurtured character development and terrific pacing is what distinguishes this work from the usual feel good , formulaic romance novel. There is a cerebral, psychological development of both L and L that is like seeing the layers of an onion peeled away, or perhaps, more appropriately, the pedals of a rose ,because this book more than passes any smell test for any genre. Did I mention this is a great book? Well done, Jamie Beck!
I enjoyed this book, not because it had an unexpected outcome - it is an HEA after all - but because it began on a new and different premise than any contemporary romance novel I have read since I started reading them in July 2015, thanks to Nancy Herkness and her Wager of Hearts series.

This story involves the well-educated daughter of a wealthy family who had a good job and was engaged to the "perfect" man. Rob was a good looking, well-educated, highly thought of attorney in a prestigious law firm on the fast track to real success. Her family, including a controlling mom who trys to manipulate her entire family, loved him. Then the attorney had no choice but to call his fiancee and reveal that a night in a bar may have resulted in him passing an STD on to her and that she needed to see a doctor. Needless to say, this ended the wedding planned for two weeks later.

The story also involves the son of a conman who drifted from state to state perpetuating con games on unsuspecting, usually older, individuals, robbing them of their life savings. The conman did not think his son needed an education, other than the kind he could teach him, and, since the boy's mother disappeared from their lives when he was 9 years old, dear old dad was the only family he had.

What I really liked about this book was the following

The drifter's son learned early on that he didn't want to follow in his dad's footsteps so, when his dad was "at work," Levi would spend his time in the library (where it was quiet and cool) reading. When he turned 18 he high-tailed it out of his dad's sphere of influence.

He took a job as a bartender at a resort in Sanibel Island, Florida. He learned that his good looks and his friendly personality translated into healthy tips. He chose to save his tip money so he could go to Las Vegas and “earn” money playing poker. By reading, Levi learned how to invest his money in the stock market.

Lindsey, whose fiancee cheated her has now quit her job and she has gone where she went growing up to visit her dad's sister - Malibu, California. Thanks to a trust fund, she leased a car and rented a house she found online. She was distancing herself from her manipulating mother to determine on her own what, if any, future she might still have with the fiancee.

Circumstances seem to conspire to cause Levi and Lindsey to rely on each other, Levi is involved in a very serious motor vehicle collision and she is dealing with a socialite mother who wants her to pack up her belongings and return to New York as well as a fiancee who claims he is sorry for what he did and wants her to forgive him and give them another chance - while still not telling her the entire truth.

In 2005, while he was working as a bartender at a posh resort in Florida, Levi met a young woman who ordered a drink. His innate ability to "read" people made him know she was underage. When she could not provide him with proper age ID, he fixed her a drink - a virgin daiquiri. Later, while he was on meal break and reading "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand, Lindsey finds him and sits down to talk with him. She is so condescending that he sends her off like she is a little girl, which irritates her.

In 2013, Levi has taken his "training" to Las Vegas and earned a sizeable amount of money at the poker tables which he invested, used to buy a house on the beach in Malibu, California, a Ducati motorcycle, and a Jeep. The house next door to his is empty, which provides him the kind of seclusion he desires.

In May 2013, Levi is visited by a police officer who informs him that his dad, with whom he has not spoken in several years, has been murdered. Because he had Levi's name and address in his wallet they have come to ask him if he will return to Las Vegas and identify the body. The police question him in an attempt to see if they can locate where he kept the money he conned people out of. Levi gives them a name his dad once told him he used to rent storage lockers so they can see if they can find any money in one.

After a trip to the Las Vegas morgue, he is handed his father's personal belongings. Included are the slip of paper with his name and address on it, the business card of a law firm, and a strip of photos taken in a drugstore photo booth of him and his dad when he was a young boy..

One morning, following his return from Vegas, Levi goes out to pick up his paper and notices a red BMW 6 series convertible parked next door. He is not happy because all of the houses on the beach are so close together. Later he is on his deck drinking coffee and reading the paper when he notices a girl on the beach. When it appears she is coming to his house he wonders two things, why and why does she seem vaguely familiar.

As his new neighbor notices him, he speaks to her. She pauses and blinks as if she's seen a ghost. She tips her chin at him and goes inside her house. Lindsey, recognizes him but is just as sure he has not recognized her.

This story is not only about the circumstances in the lives of Levi and Lindsey, it is about how Levi deals with his need for Lindsey's assistance and her need to learn how to deal with her controlling mother and a fiancee who wants things to go on as if nothing wrong had ever happened.

Of course, this is an HEA but who gets the HEA, Levi and Lindsey or Lindsey and Rob? Will Lindsey's mother get her way, as usual, or will Lindsey finally stand up for herself? Of course, I don't recommend this book for young people who are fighting their parents over the issue of education.
I thought this book was a fun and easy read. I really loved Levi and found him to be a great, sexy lead with the right amount of “angst.” Lindsey was very likable too and you just can’t help rooting for them. I’ve read many, many books that are barely tolerable because the writing was so bad. Well, this was NOT one of them - I thought the writing, insights, and evolution of the main characters were “intelligent.” This is one of those books where I lost track of time and just kept reading and reading because I couldn’t wait to see how it ended. Overall, thumbs up!
The writing is so good that you are right there with these very realistic characters. And because it is so well written, it is a very fast read. I read it in one day and I rarely do that!
