Countdown Harlequin Teen Michelle Rowen Books

The story was good but the world building and character development was a little lacking. Also, the dialogue seemed slightly juvenile. I wish I had a better review for this book with more insightful examples of where the story could've been improved but I'm not that smart. It was a decent read but I'm not sure I'd recommend it to others.

Countdown Harlequin Teen Michelle Rowen Books Reviews

Countdown was a sickening, yet fascinating book that had me turning the pages faster then I could read them! It was fast paced that started with a boom and ended with a bang! The whole book was nothing but action and adventure. But most off all a fight to stay alive and make it to the next level.

This book was a bit predictable, but still totally enjoyable! The characters had so much pain and emotion within them, and with every passing level I would see them get stronger and stronger. If the game was intended to break them, it didn't, it did the totally opposite with Kira and Rogan, it only made them stronger and more determined to get through the game and make it out alive! And that's what I loved most about these characters, Their will to stay alive, and their determination to not only make it through the game, but to also find out who is behind it, and how to stop it!

I've never read anything from this author, but I do own a couple of her books, and after reading Countdown and enjoying it as much as I did, I know I will be reading more from this author soon!

THE PLOT

WHAT HAPPENED IN THE PLAGUE

About Twenty-Five years ago a plague swept through a once thriving, successful world and took out most of human-kind, and left only small numbers of humans to pick up the pieces and try to rebuild. Violence, starvation, and crime skyrocketed, and became the way of life for the remaining humans left in the aftermath. But then their was talk of Hope! A place where their is no hunger, no killing, no violence, or no more pain! A place where dreams can come true.

Sometime in the aftermath and chaos of the plague, and City was created, a place where human life could start over and rebuild their lives. This Dream City was called The Colony! But, its not easy to get into this Dream City. To get into The Colony you have to have a ticket. And not many have the means to gain entry. So to many that's all it is, A Dream!

AFTER THE PLAGUE

This book starts off after the plague and is in the setting of a game called the Countdown, in which "Contestants" have to go through levels and complete them if the want to make it out of the game alive! This game is Televised and broadcasted in the subscribers mind, through a device that was implanted in the subscribers mind to watch their sickening reality show in private with out getting caught! The game consist of 6 levels, all deadly, and challenging. The contestants are paired with another person to complete the 6 levels of the game. If you complete the game and all the challenges they have set-up for you, then you get a new life. A life that you choose. But, if you fail to complete the game and whatever challenge they have planned for you then you will be eliminated, and the elimination is DEATH...

The Countdown only picks the lowest of the low to participate in the game. Murders, rapist, kidnappers, drug addicts, and thief's. They also make deals with prisons to take prisoners to be contestants in their game. Who's going to miss a low life? Not many people! So that's how the game stays undetected.

Kira Jordan is a thief and a very good one at that! She's sixteen and has lived on her own for the last 2 years after her family's brutal murder when she was only fourteen years old. Ever since then she has been doing whatever necessary to survive. She has nothing or no one, she is alone and has to steal to get her next meal. Kira has pick pocketed one too many people and is kidnapped and forced to participate in The Count Down at a chance at a better life. But she doesn't have a choice, its either play or die, so she plays!

Rogan Ellis is a convicted murder sentenced to life in prison and is given a chance to compete in The Count Down for a "Get Out Of Jail Free Card". So its either go back to prison and stay there until he dies, or a shot at a fresh start by competing in the Count Down's sick game. So he chooses to play the game!

Each level proves to be even more deadly then the last, and for Kira working with a convicted murder is even more challenging then the game itself! But if she wants to make it out of the game alive, then she has to do just that...Trust a murder!

Kira is not your normal 16 year old. She's special and can do special things. She as an ability to read people and get a feel on just who they are. And something is not right with who they say Rogan is. She feels theirs more to him then what she's been told, and knows he's not the person they claim he is! But why would they lie to her, why would they pair her with a "So Called Murder," and why does she feel so right when she's with Rogan? She doesn't have those answers, not yet anyway! But one things for certain, if she doesn't fight each level and win, she'll die here in the game, and that is something Kira just can not do! She will not lose, and she is determined to find out who the notorious Rogan Ellis really is!

I heard this was going to be a standalone and I see why. I mean everything was pretty much resolved and all the lose ends were pretty much summed up, but I would love to have another book to continue Kira and Rogan's adventure in the next chapter of their lives. But I can say I am pleased with this book and the way it ended!

Overall this was a fascinating book, that I really enjoyed. Though it was a little different that what I was expecting, but it still turned out to be something I really loved! If your looking for a quick read, that's about survival, with action and adventure, then this is your book!

Reviewer Me

Countdown was another fast-paced Science Fiction read for me. Although I read Countdown on the heels of Pawn, I thoroughly enjoyed this far-fetched cat and mouse, creepy android robot book. I managed to finish both novels in a span of one day – which is saying something. Though the plot twists seemed to be a bit nonsensical, I could NOT get enough of the GAME Kira and Rogan were forced to play.

Our main character Kira is thief. Choosing to live her life on the streets rather than in the foster care system after the brutal murder of her parents two years ago, she learns very fast what a pretty smile and quick hands can earn you in life. Until one day when she wakes up and finds herself in a dark room, handcuffed and sitting across from a mysterious boy – and known murderer—Rogan Ellis. Both are now part of a secret game called Countdown. Where the stakes are high and so is the reward if you make it through six levels without being disqualified or eliminated…aka, not dying. To win, Kira must learn to trust her inner “psy” abilities, and also the boy who may or may not have killed A LOT of people, including her family.

Now, the plot reminded me a lot of the sci-fi movie GAMER. Where people could essential control “Sims” and go out into the world and do whatever they wanted. On the other hand, they could also play a multiplayer game called “Slayers”, which would allow them to control prison inmates in chaotic battles. If the inmate won, they received their freedom. Essentially, this is what the game of Countdown is. Except, they aren’t being controlled by people yet the people are able to watch their every move via the chips in their heads. Maybe I’m stretching it, but I could see many parallels between the two. And since I might be one of the rare people who enjoyed GAMER, you can see why I enjoyed Countdown too.

My only criticism of the novel is the AI. I found this to be…well…a bit ridiculous. I started laughing towards the end because I just couldn’t bring myself to suspend my disbelief any longer. At first, I was on board with the artificial intelligence when I thought it was just droids in the game. However, once the other plot twist happened I was constantly *face palming*. LOL. Yes, it’s still kind of funny for me to even think about. Nevertheless, it didn’t stop me from enjoying the overall novel. Though, the last few chapters after the game is over, left me wanting more of just…the game itself.

Overall, Countdown is a solid novel. The first 50-60% of the book is pure awesome. Just remember though that there will be some weird shenanigans towards the last little bit. If you’re looking for an action filled book with great characters and over-the-top science fiction, then I do recommend picking this one up.
I loved both characters and their dialogue, and I loved how this books was like divergent and hunger games mixed together!
I enjoyed watching their struggles and journey as well as the trust build between the characters. I am impatiently waiting for the next book.
This made me think of Running Man and The Hunger Games.
I really enjoyed the story and characters. It did finish but to think there could be a sequel, not exactly what it would be about though lol.
The story was good but the world building and character development was a little lacking. Also, the dialogue seemed slightly juvenile. I wish I had a better review for this book with more insightful examples of where the story could've been improved but I'm not that smart. It was a decent read but I'm not sure I'd recommend it to others.
